Take the windy gravel road north along the North Fork of the Flathead River for some spectacular views of wildlife, and Glacier Park peaks. This drive is a local’s favorite. To begin this trip take Nucleus Avenue north through Columbia Falls. The road takes a bend at the train depot then winds north. The road is paved for the first ten miles then turns to gravel. While the road gets oiled occasionally, expect some dust as you travel. The only town along this stretch is Polebridge. The mercantile store and saloon are both worth a visit. After 37 miles of driving, you’ll need a break anyway. You can go into the park here jog north then east to Bowman Lake, or continue north to Kintla Lake, or go back to the road and continue north until the road leaves the river and head back.
