Ekalaka is home to the Carter County Museum, displaying Paleontological discoveries and Native American artifacts. Petrified wood is incorporated in the design of the museum, and a gift shop helps generate funds for this free attraction. The county seat, Ekalaka was named for the wife of David H. Russell, the first white settler in the valley. Due to the abundance of prairie dogs in the area, Ekalaka has been referred to as ‘Puptown’. The area also has deer, antelope, porcupines and snapping turtles. |
