Dempsey vs. Gibbons


In a day when a steak dinner cost 50 cents, Shelby, Montana, asked $50 for ringside seats to the famous July 4, 1923, World’s Heavyweight Championship Fight between Jack Dempsey and Tommy Gibbons. An octagon-shaped wooden arena, with a seating capacity of 40,208 was constructed for the event at a cost of $82,000. The arena covered six acres, measured 558-1/2 feet in diameter, had 85 rows of seats and 16 entrances.
