After separating from Capt. Clark, Lewis and his men traveled up the Bitterroot River to its confluence with the Clark’s Fork. From there they traveled up the Blackfoot River Valley making good time, sometimes 20 to 30 miles per day, following a Nez Perce path to the buffalo country.
