Some say that the world’s largest gold nugget was found here and bought by W.A. Clark for $19,000. The mine was originally discovered when three prospectors made camp for the night and lost their horses. While looking for the horses they discovered a quartz vein and of course, the rest is history. The operation had it’s ups and downs from 1867 until 1940 when the entire operation closed for good. The property is closed to visitors due to vandalism.
