Hamilton

Hamilton is the county seat for Ravalli County, the third largest county in the state. In 1887, Marcus Daly was shopping for a business endeavor other than mining and started a lumber industry on the banks of the Bitterroot River. Daly began acquiring land to develop a 22,000 acre stock farm in the late 1880s. Robert O’Hara and James Hamilton were brought in by Daly to design and develop the town. The town was named after Hamilton, and O’Hara became the town’s first mayor.
