I . . .asked Cameahwait by what rout the Pierced nosed indians (Nez Perce), who. . .inhabited this river below the mountains came over to the Missouri; this informed me was ot the north, but added that the road was a very bad one. . .however knowing that the Indians had passed, and did pass, at this season on that side of this river to the same below the mountains, my rout was instantly settled. . .

this Spring. . .actually blubbers with heat for 20 paces below where it rises. . .I directt Sergt. Pryor and John Shields to put each a peice of meat in the water of different Sises. the one about the Size of my 2 fingers cooked dun in 25 minuts the other much thicker was 32 minits before it became Sufficiently dun.

". . .we met a party of about 60 warriers mounted on excellent horses who came in nearly full speed. . .the chief and two others who were a little in advance of the main body spoke to the women and they informed them who we were and exultingly shewed the presents which had been given them. . .bothe parties now advanced and we wer all carresed and besmeared with their grease and paint till I was heartily tired of the national hug. I now had the pipe lit and gave them smoke"

proceeded. . .into that butifull and extensive Valley open and fertile which we Call the beaver head Valley which is the Indian name in their language from the north of those animals in it & a pt. of land resembling the head of one.

at 7 P M I arrived at the Enterance to Wisdom River and Encamped. in the Spot we had encamped the 6th of August last. here we found a Bayonet which had been left & the Canoe quite safe.
