Cut Bank

Cut Bank, located halfway between Browning and Shelby, was named after the deep gorge nearby made by the Cut Bank Creek. The Blackfeet Indians called it "the river that cuts into the white clay banks." The population which numbered 845 people in 1939 ballooned into the thousands as natural gas and oil fields were discovered and sustained for many years. Gas piped from this region is used in Helena, Great Falls, Butte and Anaconda.

Blackfeet Reservation

Located in northwestern Montana along the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains north and south of Hwy 2.

The 1.5 million acre Blackfeet reservation is the home of the Blackfeet tribe. Approximately 7,000 of the 14,750 enrolled tribal members live on or near the reservation. Close to 27 percent of the enrolled members are of three quarter or greater Indian blood.

One story has the tribal name coming from the legend of the Sun telling an old man in a vision to paint the feet of the eldest with black medicine which Sun provided. Doing so gave the old man's sons power to catch the buffalo. The old man then decreed that his descendents should be called Blackfeet.

In another legend the Blackfeet were named so because their mocassins became blackened when they crossed the burnt prairies. The name in their language is "Siksiksa" which literally translates to "Blackfoot." However, the constitution under which their tribal council was formed translates to "Blackfeet."

The reservation was established in 1851.
