The rich history of the area is captured in the Powder River Historical Museum. Antique cars, pioneer photographs, memorabilia and other artifacts that represent the ranching heritage of the area. Other exhibits include displays of fossilized remains of the mighty T-Rex, triceratops, ancient sharks, seashells, petrified bison bones, dinosaur eggs and signs from the beginnings of time. A favorite item is the buggy used by Colonel Biddle at least 100 years ago. The buggy was designed to ford the deeper streams in the area. Behind the museum itself is the original county jail. This was home to many an outlaw and cattle rustler.

Several room setting exhibits, contain artifacts from local pioneers and recreate local history. There is a reading library where visitors can comfortably sit for hours reading through pages and pages of Montana history. One exceptional building, among several on the museum’s property, contains “Mac’s Museum”, a collection of literally thousands of items in collections of everything from arrowheads to seashells. All items were carefully collected and cataloged in Mac McCurdy’s living room before the collection of collections found a permanent home in the museum. The museum is open Monday through Saturday during the summer months or you can call for an appointment. Plan to spend the day! Admission is free but donations are helpful.
