Chester is the county seal of Liberty County. The county encompasses 1,458 square miles. U.S. Highway 2 travels east to west passing through Chester. Rail passenger service is available by traveling to either Havre or Shelby. Chester is 114 miles east of Glacier Park and 90 miles northeast of Great Falls.

The Liberty County Chamber of Commerce supports all the endeavors of its communities, to preserve their history and make the area a better place to live and raise a family. The area boasts all types of businesses including banks, grocery stores, hardware and lumber stores, Realtors, insurance, law offices, CPA offices, a ministerial association, cleaners, a glass art shop, library, museum, service stations, garages, car wash, pharmacies, medical clinic, local newspaper, gift shops, restaurants, senior center, casinos, bars, lodging, building contractors, first class fire departments and ambulance service, service clubs, an airport, and a well groomed city park with new play ground equipment that welcomes campers and travelers of all ages. All of these make Chester the Heart of the Hi-Line.

Lake Elwell and Tiber Dam are located just 13 miles south of Chester on the Marias River. This area attracts fisherman, campers, hunters, boaters, and water sports enthusiasts from the surrounding areas. To the north near the Canadian border lie Sweetgrass Hills, sentinels that overlook the prairies, fields of grain, cattle, and wildlife. Recreation opportunities here include hunting, fishing, camping, picnic grounds and just the beauty of the natural surroundings.

Other communities in Liberty County include, Whitelash, a tiny community settled near the Sweetgrass Hills. The hamlet supports a school for K-8th grade, a church, the first post office in Liberty County and Liberty Hall, a modern meeting center used for anything the community or surrounding area needs.

Joplin, with a population of about 300, lies to the west of Chester. A strong sense of community pride, supports a consolidated school system with grades 7-12, K-7 are transported to Inverness. There is a Lutheran Church in Joplin and a rural Lutheran Church north of town. The town has an active Commercial Club and fire department. A park in the center of town is used for entertainment, weddings, camping, and picnics.

Liberty County Hospital and Nursing Home is one of the most modern healthcare facilities in the state. This system also supports an assisted living center, known as Wheat Country Estates. The County is fortunate to have a cultural art center and a museum for the local populace and visitors. A wide ranch of church denominations are available and several groups, for youth and adults. School facility from preschool to high school are excellent. There is a drop-in day care for those in need of childcare.
