The name of this town was supposed to be “Ray” but as sometimes happened, the Post Office Department made an error and the town was named Roy. W. H. Peck, an early settler, named it for a member of his family. The population of Roy reached its peak during the homesteader era. People came from all around by horseback or buggy to attend the Saturday night dances here. When World War I came, most of the homesteaders left and their land was bought up by larger concerns, mostly cattle ranchers.
