The grill used to cook Saco's 6,000 hamburger.
The grill used to cook Saco's 6,000 lb. hamburger

No one quite knows where Saco got its name. Some say that it comes from a contraction of Sacajawea, the name of the Shoshone woman who guided Lewis and Clark. Another is that it came from the railroad’s practice of spinning the globe and stopping randomly on a name.

For a brief period, the town of Saco was in the Guiness Book of World Records for cooking the world's largest hamburger. The hamburger weighed 6,000 pounds and took the title away from Seymour, Wisconsin. The next year, Seymour regained the title with an 8,266 pound burger. Seventeen cows went into Saco's burger. The next day the leftovers were used for biscuits and gravy at breakfast and sloppy joes for dinner.
