Taft Tunnel Bike Trail

Contact Information:
From Lookout Pass (location of Bike Rentals) or Missoula, Montana go to the Taft Exit #5 of I-90 and turn right at the bottom of the off ramp. You will then turn left at the stop sign, go over a small bridge then just follow the signs south for 7 miles on Rainy Creek Road #506, follow this road up and over Roland Pass going forward at the top of Roland Pass and down to the historic townsite and trail head of Roland (7 miles from I-90).
An old rail line was transformed, abandoned tunnels were cleared and trestles were made safe, creating one of the most electrifying recreational trails in the United States. This is undoubtedly an extraordinary bike route and hiking trail. At the center of the trail is the 8,771-foot Taft Tunnel which was cut through solid rock from the Montana side of Lookout Pass to Idaho. The trestles proceed along abrupt cliffs and over craggy rock canyons. As the track descends into Idaho, the trail meanders through another nine tunnels and over seven wooden trestles before arriving at the valley floor. Flashlights are recommended for hikers and headlights are a necessity for bikers. To reach the trail and Taft Tunnel, go over Lookout Pass on I-90 and take Exit 5 for the Taft area. Turn south and follow Rainy Creek Rd. for two miles. Take the road toward East Portal at the Y-junction and then the parking area is immediately ahead. For more information, call the Lookout Pass Ski Area 208-744-1392.
