Fort Smith

Fort C.F. Smith was established in August of 1866, built by the U.S. army to protect those traveling on the Bozeman Trail from the Sioux & Cheyenne Indian attacks. Remnants of the old Fort C.F. Smith site, located along the Bighorn River, is 4 miles north of the present day Fort Smith. In 1868, the Sioux destroyed Fort C.F. Smith, after two years of fighting with the army along the Bozeman Trail.

Today, Fort Smith is a great place to try your hand at trout fishing on the blue ribbon trout waters of the Bighorn River, known as one of the finest trout streams in the U.S. You can stop through town for supplies, fishing advice, guide services and boat rentals.
