| A few people and abandoned mine buildings still remain after the Smith Mine disaster of 1943. During the past two decades it is better known for the state’s only pig races. Every weekend from Memorial Day to Labor Day the town’s population of 50 residents grows to 500 or more for the pig event. The races have been held since 1989 at Bearcreek Downs next to the Bear Creek Saloon where you can also get one heck of a steak dinner. This nonprofit fundraiser is perfectly legal and the four-legged racers, like all sports celebrities are pampered, live high on the hog. The winning pigs pays $25 on a $2 ticket that buys a spot on the sports pool-style board. The race has become a widely known event and has attracted media and people from all over the world. Bring the whole family and know that the little squealers are racing for a good causescholarships for Carbon County high school students. | |||||||
