Jeffers

Jeffers, situated near the Madison River, is home to some of Montana’s oldest ranches. The community draws its name from New York native, Myron D. Jeffers. As a young civil engineer and hopeful miner, Jeffers headed west in 1864 in search of gold. After abandoning this pursuit, Jeffers became interested in herding cattle from Texas. In 1871, Jeffers made his break with more than 1,894 cattle and 37 head of horses. With this acquisition, Jeffers and his wife established the Yellow Barn Cattle Ranch, and in 1903, opened the area’s first post office.
