In January of 1885, six men discovered the Polaris Mine in the Lost Cloud mining district. It is believed to be the most important silver lode discovered in the region at the time. At one time, a 100 ton smelter with four blast furnaces operated near the mine. The smelter was destroyed by fire in 1922. The original town site was two miles south of the present site of Polaris.
