| You can almost feel the power oozing out of the mortar in this wedge shaped building. In the inner sanctum of these walls, much of Montana’s history was shaped in smoke filled rooms behind closed doors. This was Montana’s most prestigious club with membership open only to millionaires and is the oldest private club in the Northwest. Originally constructed in 1885, it was burned by an arsonist in 1903 and rebuilt in 1905.
Over the years many notables have graced the inside of this building. Copper kings, millionaires and politicians played host to such notable personalities as presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Howard Taft, humorist Will Rogers, author Mark Twain, movie stars Robert Montgomery, Donna Reed, Gary Cooper, Myrna Loy, and a wide assortment of royalty and other dignitaries. The building is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Today it is a dinner club for men and women. Tours of the building are available. |
