| Sitting on a hill overlooking Last Chance Gulch is a structure the locals affectionately call “Guardian of the Gulch.” The Old Fire Tower is the city’s symbol. The tower was built in 1876 to keep a watchful eye for fire. It was manned 24 hours a day with the watchman ready to sound the alarm should smoke or fire be spotted. At one time there were several of these in town. Today it is only one of five left standing in the United States. |
