East Helena, a smelter town for the Anaconda Copper Mining Company, was named for its location in relation to Helena. Many of its original settlers came from the Balkan countries shortly after the turn of the century. It is the home of one of the world’s few remaining smelters which can be seen on the south side of the road. Ore for gold, silver, lead, zinc, and other metals are shipped here from Montana and Idaho.
