Buffalo

The large, shaggy buffalo was the first resident of this community settled on the area’s rich, green hills. Appropriately named after the animal that once dominated the Montana landscape, Buffalo began operating a post office in 1890, but lack of residents forced its closure in 1893. Though many believed the town had met its fate, the Great Northern Railroad changed Buffalo’s destiny, and the community revived itself once a railroad station was built. With the arrival of the railroad, the post office opened again and businesses came back to life. Today, few people remain in Buffalo, but several thriving cattle ranches have been established in the surrounding area.
