General info

The small town of Fort Peck nestled alongside the Fort Peck Dam is the last place you’d expect to find a summer stock theater. But the Historic Fort Peck Theater has been the home to summer stock theater and other special events for almost 70 years. The theater attracts audiences from all over the country. It is the only summer stock theater in northeastern Montana and is on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1996, no less than the National Symphony Orchestra from the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. performed here.

The theater is one of the most unusual and exquisite buildings in Montana. Constructed in 1934, it's carved and painted wood chalet motif displays touches of the fine craftsmanship that was abundant in that time. At the time it was built, the 1,209 seats gave it the largest seating capacity for any theater in the state.

During the dam construction days, the theater operated around the clock to provide the 30,000 workers and their families affordable entertainment. The theater lobby still displays movie posters from those days with the likes of Shirley Temple, Clark Gable, Great Garbo, Claudette Colbert, Jimmy Stewart, and many others. An adult ticket then was 30¢ and children got in for a dime.

Today, the theater has had the stage expanded to allow for live theater. Air conditioning has been added to keep theatergoers comfortable. Performances run from mid-June through August. Curtain time is at 8 p.m. every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night. The dress is casual and admission is only a little bit more than 30¢.
