There are numerous opportunities for rockhounding in the Butte area. Radar Creek area near Toll Mountain southeast of Butte on Hwy. 2. Look here for smokey quartz crystals. At the Toll Mountain Campground look for limonite cubes. At the Boulder Batholith just east of Butte, look for quartz crystals.
Crystal Butte is about 8 miles west of Twin Bridges. This is a good place to find white quartz crystals.
Virginia City area. The gold rush may be over but you can still find placer deposits of gold in the tailings between Virginia City and Alder.
Sheridan area. Near Indian Creek west of town, you can find white and honey-colored, banded masses of calcite.
Ruby Dam south of Alder is a good place to find calcite, garnets, and opalite.
