General info

This museum focuses on the mining legacy of the surrounding area. Upstairs in the museum, view the revolving historical exhibits, including archival photos, clothing, and artifacts from Granite County.

Downstairs, experience a miner’s daily life. You’ll begin your tour here by viewing a mural depicting the above-ground activities of actual miners of the area. View an authentic assay office with all of its equipment, then enter a bank, complete with a coin collection found beneath old floorboards of a miner’s cabin.

Next, step into the world of the miner’s cabin—a completely furnished cabin has been reconstructed to depict the bare necessities the miner would have required at the end of his exhausting workday.

Explore a mining adit and tunnel. You’ll feel yourself in the miner’s well-worn boots as you experience the lighting and special effects of this mining experience. You’ll see what a real vein would have looked like lit by the soft glow of the miner’s candle. When you exit, you’ll be greeted by a 1,200-cubic-foot compressor and learn how it worked, as well as a display of mining tools, an ore car with its own design blueprint, and much more.

Also on display is an extensive mineral collection including the Bielenberg Sapphire Collection. Other exhibits include Indian artifacts, a pewter saddlebag altar used by the circuit-riding priest, period clothing, and artifacts from early ranchers and blacksmiths.

The museum is open from mid-May through October daily.
