The nation’s 10th tallest dam towers over the South Fork of the Flathead River just a few miles from the town of Hungry Horse. The 564-foot-high Hungry Horse Dam is visited each year by more than 40,000 people. The reservoir behind the dam is one of the most scenic locations for water recreation, fishing, and camping in the state. The reservoir is 34 miles long and 23,800 acres. It is located just 15 miles from the west entrance to Glacier National Park and 20 miles northeast of Kalispell. There is a visitor center at the north end of the dam which is open from May 30th through Labor Day from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. There are abundant campsites along the lakes shore, with eight campgrounds on the shore and campgrounds on Elk and Fire islands in the lake. There are also four boat launching facilities available.
