General info

This is the newest museum in Havre, but a must for railroad buffs. The small museum is packed with all sorts of railroad artifacts, information, and memories. According to museum spokesman Frank DeRosa, there were 10 different railroads rolling through Havre and the Hi-Line in the past. The Old St. Paul and Pacific rolled through Havre until it went bankrupt in 1862. The Great Northern served Havre from 1893 until 1970 when it became the Burlington Northern. The BN’s green engines rolled through town until it merged with the Santa Fe Railroad to become the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Company. One of the main attractions in the museum for kids and adults alike is the giant model train exhibit. Other items on display are a wire center used by rail offices along the lines, an old railroad pull cart with a collection of tools for laying track, and lanterns used by carmen. DeRosa also plans a reference library with books and journals for the public to use and review. The museum is open daily in the summer from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Winter hours are Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. An admission fee is charged.
