The historic Hauser dam was Samuel T. Hauser’s idea for creating electricity to sell to the mining companies in Butte and Anaconda. The dam is the second of three on the upper Missouri River. The lake created by the dam is a great place to watch bald eagles feed on the spawning salmon in the fall. Black Sandy, one of Helena’s most popular beaches, sits on the shore of Hauser. Crossing the York bridge on Hwy. 280 will take you to some great sapphire hunting mines. The Lake has the most prolific kokanee salmon fishery. Four-pound salmon are not uncommon here. There is a Visitor Center in the dam area.
