Found in hills surrounding Boulder & Basin
Montana is the radon capital of the United States, and the Boulder/Basin area is the radon capital of Montana. Each year thousands of people come to visit the radon health mines surrounding the towns of Boulder and Basin. Radon is an odorless, colorless, tasteless gas that results from the breakdown of uranium. What many spend large sums of money to get rid of, others are spending money to inhale. They flock here for relief from arthritis, emphysema, bursitis, cataracts, and any number of other ailments. Many of them have been coming for decades. They come from all over the world to find relief from what ails them by sitting in the mines. There are several mines in the hillsides surrounding these towns including the Merry Widow, the Free Enterprise, Radon Tunnel, Sunshine, and Earth Angel. While there are several radium hot springs in the country, Montana is the only state that has underground radon mines.
