General info

Chico began as a mining camp when a group of miners moved up the gulch from Yellowstone City. Some of them took up farming. It wasn’t a fun place to live for the early families there. The Crow Indians constantly attacked the settlement and stole their horses. During the winters, many of the families would take boats up the Yellowstone River for warmer parts of Montana. At one time, the town supported a hotel, meat market, blacksmith shop, store, schoolhouse, a post office, and sixty cabins. Mining operations ceased in 1933 and the town pretty much went away. A few people still live in this ghost town. Few buildings remain as reminders from busier days, but the scenery is spectacular.
