General info

Pioneer was built in 1862 before the Gold Creek placers were abandoned for the big strike in Bannack. At one time there were several hotels, general stores, blacksmith shops, and so on. The piles of tailings surrounding the remains are highly visible remnants of the ugly side of mining operations. The road is easy to drive. There are thirty-five restored historical buildings from the early 1900s. There is a shop, churches, blacksmiths, general stores, and a one-room schoolhouse. The last weekend in July is the annual celebration of Pioneer Days.  After a pancake and sausage breakfast then take a tour of the well-preserved ghost town.
