The Medicine Lake National Wildlife Refuge is located between Culbertson and Plentywood and covers over 31,000 acres of lake, wetlands, and prairie. It is home to many species of waterfowl as well as deer and antelope. More than 100,000 migrating waterfowl call the refuge home in the summer. Watch for great blue herons, white pelicans, sandhill cranes, grebes, and ten different species of ducks. In 1976, over 11,000 acres of the refuge were declared wilderness. Only non-motorized vessels are allowed on the lake. Wildlife watching and photo opportunities are abundant on the self-guided auto tour. There is a 100-foot observation tower you can climb for a panoramic view of the area. At the Teepee Hills Natural Area, you can find a number of teepee rings that mark the sites of early Indian lodges.
