In 1877, just after The Battle at the Big Hole, the Nez Perce, led by Chief Joseph, started heading towards Yellowstone National Park in hopes of fleeing to Canada. On September 13, 1877, as they crossed the Yellowstone River just nine miles from Laurel, the Nez Perce were confronted by Colonel Sturgis and the new Seventh Cavalry, which led to the Battle at Canyon Creek. This battle took three of the cavalrymen and wounded three Nez Perce. There is a small marker at the site.
