General info

This new location for the Carbon County Historical Society’s museum is in the renovated 1909 Labor Temple at the north end of downtown Red Lodge. Inside is a variety of exhibits portraying the rich cultural and natural history of the region.

Featured here is a walk-through simulated coal mine in the downstairs portion of the museum along with associated mining tools and photographs. Upstairs exhibits include: a fully restored 1890s Yellowstone National Park touring coach; the Greenough Collection of cowboy and rodeo memorabilia, including many of the items used by the renowned “Riding Greenough’s” as they performed throughout the world; an early 19th century trade tent and a display of authentic costumes and items from the fur-trade era; and a display of the Waples Family collection of more than 80 historic guns and accessories.

There are exhibits portraying the local history of the Crow Indians, trappers and mountain men, early immigrants, paleontology, and geology. There is also an eclectic collection of artifacts from the more recent past, including an old electroshock therapy machine.

There is a small admission charge.
