To start this drive from Red Lodge, take MT Hwy. 78 (the turnoff is just north of downtown) west and drive to the town of Roscoe. This route offers some spectacular uninterrupted views of the Beartooth Range to the south. On clear days you can view the Crazy Mountains to the northwest. Turn into the town of Roscoe and stay left through the town. When you cross the bridge over East Rosebud River look for an immediate right turn. This road will take you to East Rosebud Canyon and the lake. Make sure your dentures are glued on tight. This is usually a pretty bumpy road. The steep granite walls of the canyon tower over the lake creating one of the more photographic settings in the area. In 1997, the Shepard Mountain Fire burned clear much of the old lodgepole pine forest. Now thousands of aspen seedlings and wildflowers blanket the slopes. This is a great place to fish, hike and enjoy an afternoon picnic.
