Montana Shakespeare in the Parks is
a theatrical outreach program of Montana State University Bozeman. The Company’s mission is to bring quality, live theatrical pro- ductions of Shakespeare and other classics communities in Montana and vicinity at a reasonable cost with an emphasis on small, underserved communities. Shakespeare in the Parks opened in the summer of 1973. Since that time the company of professional actors has traveled over 250,000 miles, over 44 plays, presenting over 1,800 performances mostly in Montana to a cumulative audience of over half a million.
Since its inception, Montana Shakespeare in the Parks has employed a company of professionals who combine their theatrical talents with a love and appreciation for Montana and the audience they serve. Because of the Company's desire to bring a quality performance to people who would not otherwise have access to theatre of any kind, many company members have found the tour to be a rejuvenating professional experience, reminding them of “why they went into the theatre, to begin with.” This unique combination of invested performer and receptive audience coupled with out-door performances which make the actor even more accessible to the audience has evolved into a unique performance style for the Company.
Recognition of SIP's unique contribution to the cultural fabric of Montana has been both regional and national in scope. The per- performances continue to entertain audiences of all ages, usually free of charge, due to the financial support of generous sponsors throughout the state. For a complete per-performance schedule and additional information call the office on the campus of Montana State University at 994-3901 or visit them at www.montana.edu/shakespeare.
