Just outside Anaconda lies Opportunity. It was founded and named by Dr. Henry C. Gardiner, head of the Anaconda Company’s area ranch properties. In the early 1900s there was a shortage of homes in Anaconda, so, as an alternative, Gardiner established Opportunity to allow folks to raise their children in a rural setting. Ten-acre plots were sold and the first home was built in 1914. The Company provided streetcar service to Anaconda and the local smelter, via the Montana Central Spur line. The small community initially consisted of two stores and a four-room schoolhouse.
