The Milwaukee Railroad was instrumental in drawing new settlers to this Montana area in the early 1900s. An important freight station, Melstone was named after Associate Press reporter, Melvin Stone, who rode the Milwaukee and assisted the railroad president in naming newly formed towns along the railroad line.
Several farmers envisioned the Milwaukee as an important tool in shipping their products to neighboring states. However, the area’s land proved to be too dry. While it appeared that the town would wither away like many neighboring communities, Melstone’s fate turned positive with the discovery of oil. The community remains hopeful that this oil production will support the local economy for years to come.
