Rockhounding (southwest Montana)

Crystal Park is located on the Pioneer Mountains Scenic Byway about 26 miles south of Wise River. It is one of the most unique collecting sites in western Montana. This is a good place to find crystals of amethyst and smokey quartz.

Philipsburg area. There are a number of mining sites around Philipsburg. In the dumps and tailings surrounding the mines, look for tiny crystals of manganese minerals.

Anaconda area. Cable Mountain, northeast of Georgetown Lake has several piles of old mine tailings. Look in these for scheelite and epidote. On the western side of Georgetown Lake argillites and quartzites can be found.
