This is the site of Col. Joseph Reynold’s unprovoked attack on a peaceable Indian camp of Cheyennes, Oglalas, and Miniconjous on the Powder River. The Indians counter-attacked causing Reynolds to retreat and sending Gen. George Crook back to Fort Fetterman. It was this battle that told the Indians the Government was serious about moving them to the reservation.
