Manhattan, 20 miles northwest of Bozeman, is a small town that once had a profitable malting business until the time of prohibition. The stone malt house still stands and the town remains branded with a name given to it by investors who operated the Manhattan Malting Company. Originally called Moreland, a group from a landholding company in New York City renamed the town in 1891. Today it remains primarily an agricultural community.
