Fort Shaw, located on the Sun River twenty-four miles west of Great Falls, has been coined the “Queen of Montana’s Posts.” Boasting one building 125 feet long, the first professional stage performance in Montana was presented here.
The theater had log seats, and the entire orchestra rose in unison and turned down the kerosene lamps that lined the stage to dim the lights during a play. First a military post and later a school for Native Americans, Fort Shaw remains today to tell of a lively past.
