Lame Deer is located at the center of the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation and serves as the tribal headquarters and the site for the offices of the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
Lame Deer was named for Chief Lame Deer, of the Lakota Sioux, who was killed in a battle with the US Calvary in May of 1877. Today, Lame Deer is the site of the annual Northern Cheyenne Pow Wow that takes place every July 4th, complete with competitive dancing, parades, and tribal gatherings in native dress. Northern Cheyenne arts and crafts can be purchased at many businesses in town, along with the Northern Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce. The Dull Knife Memorial College is also located in Lame Deer.
