The city of Helena is the state capital of Montana. It was established in 1864 during the gold rush days when gold was discovered on a small creek nearby. At one time Helena was the richest town per capita in the country. The area includes Canyon Ferry Lake with 76 miles of shoreline notched with quiet coves for swimming, fishing, boating, and picnics. On Holter lake is the Gates of the Mountains located on the Missouri River. This area was named by Lewis and Clark because the sheer limestone cliffs appear to open or close as you approach or depart the canyon on the river.
