The town of Libby is the heart of the Northwest area of Montana in the Kootenai National Forest.Here the timber was harvested for timbers in the local asbestos mines and later for railroad bridges and ties.The town is in the Kootenai River Valley with the Cabinet Mountains bordering the south. The spectacular Kootenai Falls cascade down a 200-foot drop. Libby Dam spans the Kootenai River named for the Kootenai tribe that lived and hunted this part of Montana and located 17 miles upstream from the town of Libby. Lake Koocanusa stretches from the dam crossing the Canadian border and was named for the Kootenai, Canada, and the USA.
