Located near Box Elder Creek just five miles from the South Dakota border, Mill Iron sprang up with the ranching industry. When herders ranged 65,000 cattle on an area ranch, the settlement of Mill Iron began. The town’s residents christened their new town “Mill Iron” after the Harrison- Franklin Cattle Outfit’s Mill Iron Brand, which was frequently utilized with area cattle.
