Cartersville and Sheffield are both located along the former Milwaukee Railroad mainline that ran along the north side of the Yellowstone River. Cartersville was named in honor of former U.S. Senator Thomas Carter, who was also Montana’s first congressman. Sheffield was known as Calabar, but the name was changed when the post office was established in 1929
